1 Corinthians 6:20
20 For ye are bought at (with) a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Let’s continue to be consistent in our interpretation. The church is the temple of God, not the individual. The church becomes the body of Christ when it meets. Paul again uses the second person plural. Therefore, the church is bought with a price.
Now, let’s allow Scripture to interpret Scripture. How was the “Church” bought with a price? Paul, in the book of Acts gathered all the pastors from the city of Ephesus before he went to Jerusalem where he knew he would be arrested. As he prepared to board the ship he exhorted them to be good shepherds of the church. He said,
28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
The church is so valuable to God because it has been purchased, bought with a price, the price of His Son, Jesus. Therefore, in the church and as the body of Christ we should glorify Him, but not only in our body but in our spirit. Both our church body and our spirit are God’s. A healthy church is moved by the Spirit. The word for spirit here is πνεῦμα pneuma, and could refer to one’s own spirit or the Spirit of Christ. In this case, it could mean; Let your church be guided by the Spirit of Christ in whom you were bought. Do not let the spirit of the world creep into your body.
